More about A&W Root Beer

A&W root beer is owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc, but it is packaged and distributed by Coca Cola. It is being sold in the USA and in a few other countries like Chile, United Kingdom and Australia.

If you’re wondering what the A&W means in the name, it is basically just the initials of the founders of the drink. It was introduced to the world in 1919 during a parade celebrating the return of soldiers from World War 1 in the US. A man named Roy Allen invented the thick and new to that time drink and he offered it with a small stall on the side of the road to the people.

It became such a big hit with the crowd that Roy partnered with a man called Frank Wright to expand the business further. The name A&W stands for Allen and Wright.

A little known fun fact is that A&W were one of the first to offer a drive through concept after they expanded their locations to other cities across the US. In 1924 they introduced the franchise model to open more restaurants more quickly. by 1933 they were in 170 locations.

Fast forward to 1993, a company named Cadbury Beverages bought the company and later the same rebranded into Dr Pepper Snapple Company in 2008. To this day, the A&W root beer is considered the most successful root beer in the US.
